What Is a Forex Bonus and How Does It Work?

A forex bonus is promotional trading credit that a broker adds to your account, either for free when you sign up (a no deposit bonus) or as a percentage of the money you deposit. It is not free cash you can take out straight away. The credit gives you extra margin to trade with, and what you can usually keep is the profit you earn with it, once you meet the broker's conditions.

Brokers offer bonuses because they compete hard for new clients. For you, a well-chosen bonus is a low-cost way to test a broker's platform, execution speed and withdrawals with real money on the line – as long as you understand the rules before you trade.

How a forex bonus works, step by step

1

Credit is added

The bonus shows up as Credit in your trading terminal, kept separate from your own Balance.

2

Your margin grows

Equity = Balance + Credit + open profit/loss. More equity means more free margin, so you can open trades or hold them through bigger price swings.

3

Profit goes to balance

When you close a winning trade, the profit is added to your balance – not to the credit – and that is the part you can work towards withdrawing.

4

Conditions unlock it

After you trade the required volume and verify your identity, eligible profit can be withdrawn. The credit itself is normally removed at that point.

Worked examples

No deposit bonus

You open an account and receive a $30 credit. Over two weeks you make $45 in closed profit. Suppose the terms ask for 3 standard lots within 30 days and cap withdrawable profit at $50.

Result: after 3 lots and ID verification you can withdraw the $45 profit. The $30 credit is removed.

100% deposit bonus

You deposit $500 and get a $500 bonus, so your equity is $1,000. Suppose the terms require 1 lot for every $10 of bonus – that is 50 lots before the bonus or its profit becomes withdrawable.

Result: you can usually withdraw your own $500 at any time, but doing so early often cancels the bonus.

These figures are illustrations only. Every broker sets its own lot requirement, profit cap and deadline, so always read the official terms.

What happens when you lose?

This is the part most traders miss. In many bonus programmes losses are taken from your own balance first. If your balance falls to zero, the broker often cancels the remaining credit and closes your positions (a stop-out). In other words, a bonus helps you stay in trades longer, but it does not protect your deposit – and the higher margin can tempt you into larger positions than you would normally take.

Pros and cons of trading with a bonus

Advantages

  • Test real execution and withdrawals without risking your own money (no deposit bonus)
  • Extra margin lets small accounts survive normal market swings
  • Cash-back rebates lower your trading cost on every lot
  • Contests reward skill with cash prizes and funded accounts

Disadvantages

  • Volume requirements can push you into overtrading
  • Withdrawing your deposit early often cancels the bonus
  • Profit caps and short deadlines limit what you can keep
  • Some bonuses ban scalping, hedging or Expert Advisors

Bonus terms you should understand

Credit vs balance
Credit is the broker's money; balance is yours plus closed profit.
Volume requirement
How many standard lots you must trade before profit unlocks.
Profit cap
The maximum profit you are allowed to withdraw from a bonus.
Expiry date
The deadline after which unused credit is removed.
Stop-out level
The margin level at which the broker closes your trades automatically.
Restricted strategies
Trading styles the bonus terms do not allow, such as scalping or hedging.

Red flags to avoid

  • No licence you can verify on the regulator's own website
  • Bonus terms that are missing, vague or only available on request
  • Offers far above the market norm with unclear withdrawal rules
  • Pressure to deposit quickly or "upgrade" to unlock the bonus
  • Requests to pay a fee before you can withdraw your profit
  • Promises of guaranteed profit or "risk-free" returns

How to Choose the Best Forex No Deposit Bonus

A bigger number is not always a better offer. Use these six checks before you sign up:

  • Regulation: pick a broker licensed by a known regulator and check the licence number on the regulator's website.
  • Trading volume rule: find how many lots you must trade before profit becomes withdrawable.
  • Time limit: many no deposit bonuses expire in 30–60 days.
  • Profit cap: some brokers limit withdrawable profit (for example $50–$100).
  • Account type & instruments: confirm which account and which pairs the bonus can be used on.
  • Withdrawal process: check payment methods, processing time and any minimum withdrawal amount.

How to claim a bonus step by step

  1. Open a live account through the broker's official promotion page.
  2. Verify your email, phone number and identity documents (KYC).
  3. Request the bonus in the client area or enter the promo code.
  4. Trade the required volume, then withdraw your eligible profit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a forex no deposit bonus?

It is free trading credit a broker adds to a new live account without requiring a deposit. You trade real markets with it and can usually withdraw the profit after meeting the trading volume requirements.

Can I withdraw a forex no deposit bonus?

The bonus itself normally stays with the broker. The profit you earn with it can be withdrawn once you complete the required lots, stay inside the time limit and pass verification.

Which is better: no deposit bonus or deposit bonus?

A no deposit bonus is ideal for beginners who want to test a broker without risk. A deposit bonus suits traders who already plan to fund an account and want more margin, but it carries stricter withdrawal conditions.

Are forex bonuses safe?

They are safe when offered by a regulated broker with clear terms. Always read the full bonus terms and remember that leveraged trading can lose more than the bonus value.

How do I claim a forex bonus?

Register through the broker's official promotion page, verify your identity, then request the bonus from the client area. Some offers need a promo code or a minimum deposit.
